fonesforsafety®

fonesforsafety® - is an innovative project that successfully links resource recovery through reuse and recycling together with individual and corporate social responsibility to provide support to victims and survivors of domestic violence (DV) and support agencies and the police.

fonesforsafety®  turns used mobile phones into reconfigured “999 emergency only” personal alarms for individuals affected by DV.  The reprogrammed phones are issued by DV support agencies and/or the police to those most at risk, enabling them to contact the emergency services at a time of crisis.

fonesforsafety® provides the following key benefits:

  • supports domestic violence agencies and the police through provision of an additional safety tool that can be offered to victims as part of a victim centred approach
  • provides an opportunity for cross sector collaboration in addressing the issue of domestic violence in the community
  • ensures that domestic violence agencies and the police can remain in contact with fonesforsafety® clients
  • allows local police to rapidly access domestic violence case history in an emergency
As a result, fonesforsafety® has achieved national recognition, with support from The Home Office, The GLA, Comic Relief, The City Bridge Trust, The Body Shop, Women’s Aid, Victim’s support, the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and the London Metropolitan Police and other local regional police forces.

fonesforsafety® has been successfully piloted in Glasgow, Birmingham, Norfolk, Bristol and the London Borough of Hounslow, building on the original pilot in Southwark. In these locations, fonesforsafety® has promoted strong partnerships amongst different agencies involved in fighting DV, and also helped to mobilize communities. The project is now rolling out on a London-wide and national level, with the goal of having a local fonesforsafety® partnership in all boroughs across London and each of the nine Government Office Regions across the UK.

fonesforsafety® gives an opportunity for the public, commercial and third sector to provide actual direct practical benefit to vulnerable people across the UK. The multi-layered but clear message of the project both builds increasing awareness of domestic violence and encourages people to get positively involved through reuse and recycling.

fonesforsafety® demonstrates what is possible when a combination of seemingly different issues are brought together to produce a project and demonstrates how reuse and recycling can lead to direct social benefit.
